Read moreHomeKit is a platform that allows you to remotely control or automate smart devices in your home with Apple products. This is also known as Smart Home or home automation.
Developers like Philips Hue and FIBARO can integrate HomeKit into apps and products. This enables devices from different manufacturers to work together and be controlled via a single app. Previously, you had to install a separate app for each device, but HomeKit brings everything together.
Voice control also works. For example, you can tell Siri: "I'm going to work," and this scene will be activated, turning off the lights and lowering the heating slightly.
In addition to many HomeKit apps from manufacturers, there is also an Apple HomeKit app. With Apple's "Home" app, you can manage everything. This app is available from iOS 9.3 and later. You can add Apple HomeKit products to this app and set up, activate, and automate products and scenes (scenarios).
Apple HomeKit communication occurs via "Bluetooth® low energy" technology, which prevents batteries from draining quickly, or Wi-Fi. Communication is also secured with encryption, preventing unauthorized access to your Smart Home System. There is also a Homebridge available that allows you to use some modules that are not HomeKit compatible within HomeKit. The investment in Homebridge is often quickly recouped with the cost-effective non-HomeKit modules.
To control your HomeKit setup from outside your home, from anywhere in the world, you will need at least a 3rd generation Apple TV in your home, or an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch with iOS 9.3 or later.
